There are lots of affiliate marketing scams on the Internet, pretending to be real opportunities. However, once you sign up, you realize they don't deliver. Here's how to know when something's a scam and to avoid it.
Creating a list of all the scams online is probably impossible. They come and go, and are often pretty complex programs that look legit. However, if you know what you're looking for, you can figure them out easily.
One big sign that you're looking at a scam, not a real affiliate marketing program, is that there's no way to get in contact with support. If you see a contact form, reliable email address, or a toll free number you can call, you have a better chance of getting the real deal. if you can't find a good way to get into contact, or test questions through email don't get a quick response, you might as well find something else. Either the owners don't know what they're doing, or they're out to take you for a ride.
The reverse is a big signal, too. If you see an email without a good site, or on a site that just says it's under construction, it's time to step away. Real opportunities will be happy to tell you all about their program and how it works. Since a website takes a little while to set up, it tells you that the site owner has put a little effort in.
Find out what's being sold. If a site won't tell you what the product is, how do you know if it's going to sell? If you don't see any other product than a chance to earn money, what you've found is actually a pyramid scheme disguised as a marketing program. People in this kind of organization just keep passing money along to the top, all while hoping to have some of it when the whole thing falls down. This is illegal, plus it's a bad business model!
Ask yourself if you can get into the program for free. Any program where you have to pay to sell the products isn't an affiliate program. Some of them are MLMs, or multi level marketing programs, instead. Not all of these are scams, and some people can make an MLM work for them. However, they're not for everyone, and getting set up can be expensive.
Reviews can be a good sign. If you find positive information from a source other than the main site, then there's a better chance you're seeing a real opportunity. Free programs take up time, which is valuable to all of us. So, before you join up, take the time to check that affiliate program out and make sure it's the real deal.
