Picking a product that is supposed to be the next "hot" thing instead of picking a product that appeals to you and you understand is a big mistake.
Avoid doing this and instead try to pick a product that you are interested in and know a little bit about. You need to take a little time and research the areas you have interest in. Then, when you promote the product you will sound like an expert and people will learn to trust you.
Some people think that the more affiliate programs they promote will earn them more money. The truth is that you need to be laser focused on each product and when you spread yourself around all over the place you can't do that.
Focus on one product at a time and do a really good job of giving potential buyers all the information they need to make an informed and confident decision to buy from you. That will show your customers you really know what you are talking about and again, it builds more confidence in you and makes them want to buy from you.
So many affiliates don't buy the product they want to promote and they try to "bluff" people into thinking they know about the product and why the customer should buy it. But that lack of personal knowledge of the product always comes through and 9 times out of 10 that affiliate has a very hard time making sales.
Try and follow the above suggestions and avoid the things that other newbies do that make them end up quitting because they are not making sales. You won't have the same problem. If you work your affiliate marketing program in all the right ways you will earn money and build a business that you can count on for many years to come.
The idea is to move slowly as you work toward becoming a successful affiliate marketer. Learn as much as you can so you don't make mistakes. You will make some mistakes but those will only be ones that help you learn from and won't hurt you in the long run. This learning period will actually save you time in the long run.
