5 Steps to Make Money Using Google Adwords

Friends and family are always asking me “How to make money using Google Adwords”. It’s funny because about 8 months ago they all thought I was crazy when I told them about Affiliate Marketing and making money online. Look who is laughing now.

Due to my success I recently decided to give back to my family and friends by sharing the methods I use to generate a decent amount of money with marketing products using Google Adwords. Over the course of two weeks I formulated a plan of action that is easy to understand and implement. I wanted to keep it simple with very few steps without sacrificing important information.

I tested this exact method with several family members and helped them when needed to see what kind of results they would achieve. The results were remarkable. Each began to make sales within days of going live with their Adwords campaigns.

Only if I had this information when I started…it would have saved me a lot of money and time.

If you are interested in making money online or have tried but failed then I encourage you to use the 5 steps I am about to show you. If you ever had the question “How to make money using Google Adwords” you are in luck because here is a simple proven process laid out for you to use.

Before we begin it is critical that you understand one key point. The key to any successful pay-per-click campaign is research. I cannot stress this enough folks. How can you sell your product if you do not know who your market is? You must research to find out who your market is, what problems are they having and how your product can solve their problems. If you can provide a product or service that targets their problems you will make thousands!!

So let’s get started.

Step One - Research a new Niche Market

1. Check magazines (magazines are a great place to research what people want)

2. Check if Niche Market has affiliate programs

3. Check Alexa ranking for each affiliate program (this will tell you traffic for the affiliate program)

4. Check several related affiliate programs to compare content and offering

5. Answer Questions:

a. Does the market have demand?

b. Who is market audience?

c. What does market want or need?

d. What problems do they have?

e. How can this product/service solve these problems

f. Can you cross sale products?

Step Two - Analyze Data

1. Is there a demand?

2. Are there affiliate programs to supply the demand?

3. What products are advertisers promoting within this industry?

4. What keywords are they using?

5. Product Quality

a. Research what people are saying through forums, review websites, news groups, etc.

6. Do the affiliate sites have an Alexa Ranking below 100,000?

Step Three - Research keywords

1. Make a list of benefits

2. Get keywords from magazine ads

3. Forums & User Groups

a. What are hot topics?

b. What problems are people having or needing answers to?

c. What advice is hot?

d. Does topic have a lot of replays or views in the forums?

4. Check competitors websites

a. Check their website for keyword patterns (if keyword is used three or more times then they may be promoting that keyword and making money from it)

5. Check search volume per keyword

6. Check Google/Yahoo Ranking

7. Are there many Adword campaigns?

8. CPC (Cost Per Click) vs. Commission

Step Four – Create Landing Page (website tailored for your product/service)

1. Develop landing page focused on providing supply for the demand based on research

2. Use keywords found from research in content

Step Five - Create PPC Campaign

1. Develop campaign around niche market

2. Create ad groups with 20 or less keywords

3. Use keywords in title and body of ad

4. Split test ad groups between two different products and websites

5. Test, test and test

If you apply all this steps, you can make money with anything online. Like I said earlier, the key is research. If you spend time and learn about your market you will make a lot of money. If you get lazy and skip this critical step you are sure to waste a lot of money or make very little. What is PPC?

Google AdWords™ vs. Overture™

Which one is best for you? We'd say AdWords™ because it has worked better for us, but we think you should try them both. Overture™ has steadier rules than AdWords™, and it's easier to learn. On the other hand, the bidding prices are higher, and it does not reward you for relevance. But you may have the surprise to convert better for certain keywords, though. In this case, why say no?

AdWords™ benefits

Here's what makes AdWords™ special:

* Your advertising is HIGHLY TARGETED. You choose the exact keywords that your ad displays for and also the keywords that your ad doesn't display for.

* You are urged to produce RELEVANT ads. Relevance leads to click-throughs. The more click-throughs your ad generates, the higher it ranks. That means more targeted visitors (and more customers) at the same cost.

* YOU control the COST. AdWords™ campaigns are 100% under your control. You decide how much you can afford to pay for each click (the maximum bid), and how much to spend overall (daily budget).

How To Build Your Basic Keywords List

Finding the right keywords is vital. This is where one can tell whether your AdWords™ campaign has any chances to succeed or not. This article offers you the basics in building your broad keywords list.

If you already have an AdWords™ account, you may remember that the program requested you to first create the ad and only afterwards select your keywords. Practice has proven that things work out better the other way around.

In our previous section we were saying that it is still important to have your account running before brainstorming for keywords, because it is the only way you can have access to the traffic estimator tool — that will be quite indispensable in keyword tracking. The solution is to set only one ad group, have the account created and come back after you've created your keywords list.

What's a Keyword and Why Is It Important?
Understanding how keywords work is the most important step in using Google AdWords™. Simply put, a “keyword” is actually a phrase that the user types in a search box. But why would the user do that?

Sometimes, analyzing what people type in search boxes, there's no way to tell why they do it, or what they are looking for. Why would someone search the letter “a”? Or “m”? These letters are among the most frequently searched terms on the web. But the truth is, there's always a reason. Usually the search term represents a wish, a need, a desire, a curiosity expressed in one to several-word phrases.

Why Is It Important to Know How People Search?
The bottom line for any online business is giving people exactly what they search for, as an extension to giving them what they want in the real world. That is how a search engine “thinks”. Through keywords you can find out what people want.

Keyword research is important because it tells you:

1.how people express their desires and interests on the web
2.how many people search for the same thing

the two numbers to approximate your target market.

Brainstorming for Keywords

The easiest way to start is to write down all the phrases you can think of, that relate to your business. Don't exclude anything, on any reason.

Don't stop at this point, because the trap is to find phrases that your prospects would never search because they don't know your business from inside, like you do. On the other hand, you could be missing exactly the keywords that most people would search — the common ones.

When creating your gross list of keywords, use the following methods:

* word stemming (espresso, nespresso, etc.)
* write both plurals and singulars (espresso machine, espresso machines);
* discover synonyms (espresso maker, espresso brewer);
* figure out the most common misspellings (expresso, expreso, etc.)
* figure out different punctuations (espresso machine, espresso-machine, etc.)
* do not limit your search to one word phrases; find two word phrases, three word phrases, etc;
* think about specific problems that can appear related to your business; use them as keywords (espresso machine repair).

How many keywords do you need? At this stage, you need all the keywords you can find. Follow the basic rules of a brainstorming session and give all the keywords their own chance. Usually, a list of several hundred keywords is considered a good start. Remember that in the end you'll only choose a fraction of them; also, you'll probably figure out brand-new keywords on the way.

Keyword Research Tools
Figuring out the keywords list by yourself is OK, as long as you have enough time for a long trial and error process. A better way is to use keyword-research tools right from the start. The advantage is that you have access to real-time statistics like:

* related terms that people search
* keyword popularity — how many people search the same phrase
* competition search — how many sites compete for the same keyword

AdWords™ has a Keyword Suggestion Tool, but it doesn't indicate the popularity count of each search phrase. But use it anyway, because it's free and at this point any suggestions are really helpful.

Overture's Inventory is another tool you can use. Although it's free, it has some limitations, too:

* it doesn't distinguish among singulars and plurals
* does not use word stemming, counting words from the same family as one and the same
* counts correct and misspelled keywords together

The most widely used service in the industry and by far the best keyword tool around is WordTracker. Most serious advertisers use it with great results. They have a flexible pricing policy, starting as low as $6, so we strongly recommend you to give it a try, if you can afford it. It will make a huge difference.

If you use SiteBuildIt, you can benefit from its own keyword generator, which is quite good.

The Basic Keywords List Is Ready. Now What?
Join all the keywords you've found in one place. We suggest a spreadsheet, because it's easier to manage and you can use additional fields.

The next thing is to figure out which keywords you rule out, and group the remaining ones into clusters. Most probably you'll want to create a campaign for each cluster (group), so this is a very important step. If you're looking for quick ways to make extra money and you are on a shoestring budget, then this option is probably right for you, because:

* Any affiliate program is free to join. If you find one that requests a subscription fee, please let us know :).
* Apart from the time it takes, learning about affiliate marketing is cost effective. You can find a lot of good online resources or, better yet, get a good affiliate ebook for only a few bucks. It's not exactly rocket science, actually. You'll learn things like how to find the best best affiliate programs, how to promote them using AdWords™ (PPC) or how to track your results.

If you're completely new to this online-affiliate-business stuff, the best read you can get is Ken Envoy's Affiliate Master Course (a free one), or, even better, Rosalind Gardner's Super Affiliate Handbook. If you plan to use exclusively AdWords™, than you must get Chris Carpenter's classic Google Cash.

Your initial budget doesn't have to be bigger than a few hundred dollars, unless you decide so.

Still, there's some effort to put in your affiliate campaigns. And each part of the job you don't want or you don't know how to do is going to cost.

Here are the major tasks:

*Find profitable affiliate programs to join
*Build a website/landing pages
*Get an AdWords™ account (if you don't already have one)
*Set-up the campaigns: keywords list, ad groups, ads, bids
*Track results/test and tweak
*Cash the checks :)
*Expand

How much money can you earn? The sky is the limit. There are thousands of affiliate programs and millions of people to sell to. The trick is to re-invest your profits and to have a solid trial period for each new program you join — test your keywords, ads, sales, before you run the campaign at full speed — and be sure to make a profit at the end of each month.

How To Use AdWords™ To Make Money From Affiliate Programs
You can successfully mix your Google AdWords™ expertise with the potential of affiliate programs.
Ever since Chris Carpenter wrote his legendary Google Cash, tens of thousands of people started to exploit this gold mine, making thousands of dollars each month with almost no effort (and that's quite amazing, as we bet most of them had almost no other knowledge about doing business online).

However, on January 5, 2005, Google AdWords™changed its policy regarding affiliates and things got a bit more complicated.

This is good and bad news altogether.

The good news is that the competitive potential is bigger. The bad news is that you can't lead the clicks directly to the merchant's site. You can't redirect either. You have to build your own landing page(s).

Is There a Life After January 5?
As you have probably noticed, all the affiliate gurus on the web praise the living before the date of January fifth 2005 and curse what's left of it after this date. Why's that? Let's put it this way: before January fifth, you could make money from affiliate programs without owning a product and a website. After that, you must have your own website, or at least a landing page. Before January fifth, you had to know only about keyword research, targeting, writing ads and bidding. After that date, you must also learn about creating web pages.

So to speak, before January fifth you had to read only one book: Google Cash. After that, you found yourself in the position to read two books: Google Cash and Make Your Site Sell :)

Thus, the changes are not that dramatic. Further, we still see the possibilities to obtain and maintain an affiliate income using Google AdWords™.

Why AdWords™ Is the Perfect Match for Affiliate Business Today
Our advice is that you build a website (landing page). Suppose you are going to, here are 7 reasons to keep selling your affiliate products through AdWords™:

You can promote more affiliate programs on the same site. Just maintain the topic.
Having your own website is like working for yourself. You can develop your own brand. A brand that is so powerful that it can sell other brands.
You generate your own traffic, besides what you get from AdWords™.
You have a base to build credibility upon. Customers will keep coming back to see what you think of this and that, because you know your business.
You get linked to by other users that appreciate your content. You get free traffic.
You are in the position to negotiate better conditions for your own customers with the merchants (eventually).
You sell more.
How to Do It
The Internet users today are going through changes; they become more sophisticated. You are probably already surprised about your highly targeted traffic tending to ignore what you long thought to be “words that sell”. In the end, you are out there to sell more, but you can't until you write better content.

So:

Pick up your affiliate program.
Think of a smart way to promote it.
Build solid, content rich landing pages that promote the program you are affiliated for .
Drive targeted traffic to your landing pages through Adwords™ campaigns.
Once you learn about landing pages, you can start making money with affiliate programs even better than in the old days. Even if you don't have any clue about it, you can learn in a few days — just use Ken Envoy's “SiteSell” service or, if you are really lazy, get a copy of Google Landing Page Generator.

Not Convinced? Still Want to Be an Affiliate Without Building a Site?
If you still want to be an affiliate with no landing pages, then we have no option left but to tell you about the things that you really shouldn't do, and then about two possible strategies you may adopt.

First of all, remember your ad has to link to a webpage. Because you don't have your own, it has to be that of the merchant. According to the new affiliate policy, AdWords™ will pick among all affiliate ads the one that has the highest CTR, and will not display any of the others. You can't use technical tricks like redirect or change URL. AdWords™ rules are against them and sooner or later they'll have your ad discontinued. Plus, if your competitors decide you don't play fair, they have the right to tell.

In this case, there are two things you can do:

Place First Among Affiliates
To do that, you have to beat all the competitors. You have to constantly get more clicks than any of them, so that the AdWords™ algorithm pick your ad instead of theirs. This is really hard to accomplish when you have very competitive keywords. But it's not impossible.

Advertise Where There Is Low Competition
That means you should look for keywords that nobody (or very few) are using yet, write ads for them, and link to the merchant's site. This technique has even more advantages because you can get your ads on the first position for only five cents the click. The downside is that “undiscovered keywords” are hard to find. These keywords may also be of lower popularity, but that shouldn't bother you as long as the CTR is OK. If you decide to go on this path, our advice is to use AdWordEqualizer. You'll love it — it simply tells you what and where to sell!
